Julius Africanus Sextus

Julius Africanus Sextus
(c. 160–c. 240)
   Historian.
Julius was born in Palestine and, as a young man, travelled widely. After settling in Emmaus, he led an embassy to the Emperor Heliogabulus which enabled the town to be rebuilt. He met origen in Alexandria and supervised the building of a public library in Rome. He is remembered for his fivevolume Chronographia, a history of the world, in which he argued that the world had existed for 5,700 years and would last approximately three hundred more. He also wrote the twenty-four-volume Cesti, an encyclopaedia of medicine, science and natural history. Both works survive only in fragments.
